Here you will find details of the changes to the free baggage allowance which will apply to tickets issued from 1 June 2012.
Free baggage allowance for tickets issued from 1 June 2012
For the free baggage allowance Lufthansa uses the standard ‘piece’ concept. The permitted free baggage allowance is in accordance with the service class used and can vary in terms of the number of pieces of free baggage allowed as well as the weight of those pieces of baggage. For tickets purchased from 1 June 2012 the following allowances apply.
Miles & More status customers and Star Alliance Gold Members enjoy an additional free baggage allowance over and above this.

Most Significant Carrier rule (MSC) effective since 1 April 2011
Effective since 1 April 2011: if the geographically longest or most significant stretch of your journey is not operated by Lufthansa, but by another airline, this airline’s rules may also apply to Lufthansa flights or Lufthansa flight numbers.
If Lufthansa operates the geographically longest or most significant stretch of the journey, then the rules and charges effective since 1 June 2011 apply.
The applicable free baggage allowance is shown on your ticket.
The MSC rule does not apply to journeys to/from the USA.
Special baggage rules for travel to/from or across the USA:
Under a consumer protection law issued by the US Department of Transportation, the following baggage rules apply to flights to/from or across the USA:
- Consistent baggage rules apply to all parts of a journey to/from or across the USA. These include the free baggage allowance, the dimensions and weight of each of your bags, the level of any charges that may be incurred and hand luggage regulations.
- The baggage rules set by the airline which is listed first on the ticket are those that usually apply here. If Lufthansa is listed on the first flight segment of your ticket, then Lufthansa’s baggage regulations will apply to your entire journey(1) — both your outbound and your return flight.
- However, any airline which is listed as the first carrier on the ticket is at liberty to transfer the baggage rule stipulation to another airline in the itinerary (the so-called ‘Most Significant Carrier’). In such a case that other airline’s rules would then apply to the entire journey.
- Lufthansa therefore cannot guarantee that, for a Lufthansa-issued ticket, the Lufthansa baggage rules will always apply in every case. Other airlines often have baggage rules which differ from those of Lufthansa.
For details of the free baggage allowance applying to your individual flight, please see your ticket and the e-mail confirmation which you receive from Lufthansa.
(1)Hand luggage rules may vary due to local laws.
Local restrictions on baggage weight
Please note that the maximum weight limit per single piece of baggage is 45kg for all flights (outbound and return, as well as transfers).
To the destinations listed below, irrespective of class, the maximum weight per single piece of baggage is 32kg:
Abu Dhabi, Almaty, Amsterdam, Astana, Australia, Basel, Billund, Bari, Bruessels, Cyprus, Donetsk, Doha, Dubai, Dublin, Florence, France, Genoa, Johannesburg, Khartum, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Luanda, Malta, Muscat, Naples, New Zealand, Rostov, Rotterdam, Saudi Arabia, Sofia, Spain, South Africa, Stockholm, Turin, United Kingdom, Verona
Bags which exceed these weights will not be accepted as checked baggage. You can have them sent by cargo and at cargo rates.
Maximum weights and conditions for free baggage allowance are not affected by this regulation.
Excess- and special baggage
If you find that your luggage exceeds the free baggage allowance, you can still take it with you, as before, on payment of an excess baggage charge.
